J.W.’s News Update: Tuesday August 9, 2011

Good Tuesday, Here are some stories making headlines today:

Texas side police say one man is hospitalized and another in jail after an apparent hit and run crash. Authorities were called to the intersection of New Boston Road and Westlawn Drive yesterday evening around 7:20 pm.

Police say a moped driven by 36 year old Steven Davis was one of the vehicles involved in the crash. Davis was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Authorities located a second vehicle at a home in Wake Village, Texas. The driver was arrrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid, which is a felony in the state of Texas.

A record 249 counties in the state of Texas have outdoor burn bans in effect. The Texas Forest Service says only 5 counties in South & Southeast Texas are without bans. Prior to this year’s drought, the record was set back in 2006 when 221 counties were under such bans.

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe is releasing $100,000 from the disaster fund to aid the state response to wildfires. The money will be used for the Arkansas National Guard response to fires around the state. The guard has been the primary source of air support for the firefighting efforts.
