A burst of hiring in December has lowered the nation’s unemployment rate to 8.5%. That is down slightly from the 8.6% reported in November. The Labor Department says the economy added a net 200,000 jobs last month. The hiring gains cap a six month stretch in which the economy generated 100,000 jobs or more in each month. That has not happened since April of 2006.

Economists forecast that the job gains for 2012 will top 2.1 million. However economists also say the U.S. economic growth will slow to around 2% this year overall.
