The monthly Texarkana, Arkansas, recycling event, Green Texarkana, will be held Saturday.

The City has recycled more than 68 tons of waste so far in 2015 and is on target to meet its annual recycling goals. Staff members encourage residents to help meet these goals by making a concentrated effort to recycle in the remainder of the year.

“We want the program to grow each year, and we are halfway through 2015,” said Brandy Lewis, recycling coordinator. “We are asking everyone to continue their dedication to recycling and encourage folks who haven’t tried it yet to get on board.”

Green Texarkana is a single-stream recycling collection where paper, cardboard and plastics can be mixed together. Volunteers will be on hand from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at E. 3rd and Hazel streets, collecting this material. This program also offers electronics recycling.

The City provides additional recycling options at its recycling center at 2601 Dudley St., where materials are separated by type. The recycling center has bins for cardboard, aluminum cans, steel cans, clear plastics, colored/opaque plastics and film such as grocery bags and shrink wrap. Another bin is available for mixed paper such as office waste, junk mail, newspapers and books.

The recycling center also offers programs to recycle fluorescent lights and ink cartridges.

“Most people we talk to are surprised how much their amount of trash reduces when they begin to recycle,” Lewis said. “About three-quarters of what we throw away can be recycled, and we are doing our best to provide a responsible alternative to throwing something away.”
