According to MSN News, “Mail would be delivered. Social Security and Medicare benefits would continue to flow” but Smithsonian museums and national parks would be closed putting an untold number of people on furlough.

Although today marks the 123rd anniversary of Yosemite National Park, which covers 1,190 square miles of the eastern portion of California, many visitors to this truly impressive park will be turned away.

Thus “the first shutdown of the U.S. government in 17 years began early Tuesday as Congress bickered and bungled an effort to fund federal agencies due to a bitter ideological standoff over Obamacare,” states the New York Daily News.
