Radio Controlled airplanes will fill the skies near Texarkana's Lake Wright Patman later this month.The Texarkana Radio Control Flying Club will have its 25th annual "3D and Scale Flying Event"  from Thursday, April 23 through Sunday, April 26, at Ravel Stroman Field at Lake Wright Patman near Texarkana. Pilots from from the Four States area and as far away as southern Missouri will be here. This year's participants include pilots from Hot Springs, Little Rock, Marshall, Fort Worth, and Shreveport. Last year there were 98 pilots registered.

The planes will vary in size from 60 percent scale or 21 feet wingspan to as small as just under 12 inches. There will also be some night flying.

Various aircraft will be flown, including Warbirds, Military, and Aerobatic Stunt plants. The power plants in these crafts will vary from electric motors to greater than 275 cc "chain saw" type engines.

Pilots can fly anything they bring on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. But Saturday flying will be restricted to 80" single wing, 50' biplanes, and 140" jets or larger.

The landing fee is $25 and there will be Saturday lunch for registered pilots. The 25th Annual Texarkana Big Bird Event is free for the to public to come and watch. There will be a modest concession stand provided.

Directions to the event: Take Highway 59 South to the right on FM 2148. Turn at the entrance to the lake and take the road over the dam to Ravel Stroman Field.
