It was one of the most hotly contested categories at the 2013 Academy Awards, but Christoph Waltz squeaked ahead of some very tough competition and took home some Oscar gold, winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino‘s ‘Django Unchained.’ This was not an easy victory, especially since every nominee in this category was a past winner!

‘Django Unchained’ is a film with many highlights, but Waltz’s performance as German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz shines the brightest. He doesn’t just bring life to the most fascinating character in the film, but to one of the most fascinating characters Tarantino has ever written (which is saying a lot). The role showcases Waltz’ incredible versatility as a performer, letting him bounce between comic relief and heroic badass, often in the same scene (and often at the same time!).

This was Waltz’s second Academy Award nomination and second win. He also won a trophy in this category in 2009 for his equally incredible work in ‘Inglorious Basterds.’ Waltz beat out Alan Arkin in ‘Argo,’ Robert De Niro in ‘Silver Linings Playbook,’ Phillip Seymour Hoffman in ‘The Master‘ and Tommy Lee Jones in ‘Lincoln.’
