It’s been a big year for Ben Affleck, who put on the black cape in both Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad this summer, but the later part of this year will see him sink his teeth into more understated, non-superhero roles. He’ll make math thrilling in The Accountant in October, and after that he’ll venture down into the gangster underworld of the 1920s in Live By Night, which is looking like an awards season contender now that its wide release date has been moved up to January 2017.

Live By Night is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane, and tells the story of Joe Coughlin, the son of a police officer who slips into the seedy world of Prohibition-era organized crime. His journey up the ladder brings him into contact with various molls, dames, and owls, from Boston to Tampa to Cuba.

The film also stars Zoe SaldanaSienna MillerElle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson and Chris Cooper, and is directed by Affleck himself. Live By Night’s wide release is January 13, 2017, which means we can probably expect a limited release at the end of this year, just in time for Oscar season.
