Everyone talks about what a beautiful morning it was on September 11, 2001, before all hell broke loose in NYC. I was asleep when the phone rang, it was Benson “Fish” Anable. He worked on the Eagle then from 10am to 3pm weekdays. He said “Wake your ass up and turn on the TV, a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center!”. I fumbled for the remote and turned on NBC just in time to see the second plane hit the South Tower.
I was going thru videos of the local wildfires and noticed what a difference one day can make with a wildfire. The first video is footage along Hwy 59 on September 6th, and the second video was shot on September 7th along the exact same stretch of road…
I guess this slipped by me at first, with all of the hurricane coverage, but… WOW! Federal Agents raided Gibson Guitar manufacturing facilities in Nashville, and Memphis Tennessee under suspicion of Gibson importing illegal hardwoods.Federal authorities confiscated over a million dollars in wood.
This is one of the stories in all of the Hurricane coverage that gave me a real sense of pride. Proud that the 3rd US Infantry Regiment “The Old Guard” will never forget the sacrifices and the respect owed, to not only the Tomb Of The Unknowns, but to all of the men and women that have fought and died for our country.
Hurricane Irene is storming, and some areas on the east coast are really getting slammed hard. High winds, LOTS of rain blowing over trees on houses, cars, and people. We remember when Rita came through town, and did lots of damage here (Even blew away part of the Fair & Rodeo…Remember?). However, if you are doing a weather report in an area where the storm is not that bad at the moment, and you are in Virginia… you can expect rednecks… and expect them to get NEKKID!
Earlier this week we shared the info, and the heart-breaking photo of Hawkeye, the dog that was photographed grieving at his owners casket. Petty Officer 1st Class Jon Tumlinson gave his life in service of our country August 6th in Afghanistan. At his funeral last week, Tumlinson’s friend Scott Nichols brought Hawkeye to the funeral, and Hawkeye went straight to his owners casket, laid down, and mourned there on that gym floor for the entire service.
