Arkansas history buffs around the Texarkana area may enjoy a traveling Arkansas Civil War exhibit, which is coming to town this month.Civil War Arkansas, 1861-1865, the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, ACWSC, a traveling exhibit, will be at the Texarkana Welcome Center July 6-19. Other events concerning the Civil War that will be held around the state include:

  • The Surrender at Jacksonport, an event featuring a re-enactment of the farewell speech of Confederate General M. Jeff Thompson, will be held July 4 at Jacksonport State Park.
  • Cannon Firing Demonstration will be held at Lake Charles State Park on July 5.
  • Grand Prairie Civil War Round Table will feature Wesley Cole speaking on Civil War embalming at the Lonoke County Museum in Lonoke on July 14.
  • Arkansas’s Civil War Comes to an End: The View from 150 Years Later,” featuring Mark Christ of the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, will be held at the Old Independence Regional Museum in Batesville on July 19.
  • The World Turned Upside Down,” the 9th annual Red River Heritage Symposium, will be held July 25 at Historic Washington State Park.
  • Civil War Arkansas 1861-1865,” the ACWSC traveling exhibit, will be at the Cross County Library in Wynne July 27 to August 9.
  • Civil War Round Table of Arkansas will feature Brian Brown speaking on “The Red River Campaign: Sideshow to Steele’s Camden Expedition” when it meets at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock on July 28.
  • Lakeport Legacies will feature Dr. Blake Wintory speaking on “Annie Reeves’ Chicot County Civil War Diary, 1861-1863” at Lakeport Plantation at Lake Village on July 30.
  • Des Arc Rangers: Co. B, 1st Arkansas Mounted Rifles, an exhibit on a Confederate unit raised in the area, will continue at Lower White River Museum State Park at Des Arc during July.
  • 'Freedom! Oh, Freedom’: Arkansas’ People of African Descent and the Civil War, 1861-1866 will continue at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center in Little Rock during July.
  • War on the Water: Gunboats on the White River, an exhibit at Lower White River Museum State Park in Des Arc, will continue during July.

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission is housed within the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. The AHPP is the Department of Arkansas Heritage agency responsible for identifying, evaluating, registering and preserving the state’s cultural resources.

Other agencies are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Old State House Museum, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission and the Historic Arkansas Museum.
